How StowGauge estimates storage space

The estimate is a transparent comparison model, not a measured inventory, provider quote, or fit guarantee. This page records the current coefficients, formula, and validation status.

The model is in an early evidence-building stage. Validation against representative completed rentals is still pending. The coefficients below are planning assumptions and will be revised only when observed outcomes justify a change.

The formula

Required volume = (home baseline + boxes + large items) x 1.12 x optional 1.18 aisle factor.

The result is rounded to the nearest cubic foot and matched to the smallest common unit capacity that covers it. When the estimate exceeds 2,400 cubic feet, StowGauge shows the largest common size and flags the overage instead of claiming that it fits.

Unit capacity assumptions

Common unit capacities use nominal floor area multiplied by an 8-foot planning height: 5 x 5 is 200 cu ft, 5 x 10 is 400, 10 x 10 is 800, 10 x 15 is 1,200, 10 x 20 is 1,600, and 10 x 30 is 2,400. A provider's usable interior can differ because of ceiling height, columns, door placement, or other obstructions.

Physical-fit check

The optional measurement check compares the entered rectangular item dimensions with the nominal unit footprint, an entered or default 8-foot planning height, and the entered door opening. It checks simple straight orientations. It does not model turns, hallways, elevators, stairs, vehicle clearance, flexible items, disassembly, or safe handling.
